South Korea, which has entered an aged society, is experiencing the fastest aging in the world. However, we have low healthy adjusted life expectancy compared to increased averaging life expectancy, so there is a growing interest in various interventions for extending the healthy life span of the older adults to spend independent life and high quality of life. In this review, we overviewed the guidelines for exercise interventions and considerations for exercise in order to maintain their physical function and to prevent the functional decline associated with chronic diseases in the aging process. The decline of physical function with advancing aging is closely related to changes in muscle force-velocity relationship. Therefore, specific interventions focusing on enhancing in the muscle force-velocity relationship might be effective for the older adults with chronic disease and low physical function. Especially, power-oriented exercise intervention using low-intensity and high-speed has been highlighted as an effective exercise modality in improving the muscle strength and velocity in older adults. We also introduced eccentrically based exercise training using eccentric forces relatively spared during the aging process as a specific method for improving both muscle force and velocity.
